Sometimes even good guys seemed to wear black hats. The Virginian, High Chaparral and Big Valley are typical of Sixties TV Westerns.īut the world was changing. Now he got to kiss the girl too!īy the Sixties, the Westerns, led by ratings winner Bonanza, begin broadcasting in color. No longer did the hero kiss his horse and ride off into the sunset. The TV Westerns became more and more “adult”. The airwaves then were filled with Westerns, such as, Wagon Train which debuts in 1957 along with Maverick and Have Gun Will Travel. In the mid-Fifties Gunsmoke begin its 20 year run and was the first successful "adult" Western. The earliest TV Westerns were mostly for kids, typified by Roy Rogers, Hopalong Cassidy, and Gene Autry. There were about 120 of them depending on what you consider a Western. The TV Western reigned supreme in the Fifties and Sixties.
